The NAVAL FIRE FIGHTING TRAINING and EDUCATION SYSTEM (NAFTES) is a holistic framework for the training of crew and officers in simulated fire conditions in representative ship engineering compartments. The NAFTES Project provides a fully functional personalized learning environment that introduces an innovative, both theoretic and hands on, firefighting training approach. Its goal is the incorporation and constructive use of web and AR technologies in the teaching and learning process for both basic and advanced firefighting training. In this module trainees will have the opportunity to comprehend what is the NAFTES program and which is its scope. Furthermore, they will get informed about the training methods, as well as about the modules which consist the Advanced Firefighting courses. Finally, a presentation of the training facilities will take place.

Fire is one of the most dangerous situations that can happen in a ship during a journey. The fact that there is no external help, indicates that the seafarers should acquire the necessary skills to conduct a firefighting operation properly. In order to attain that, they have to take both theoretical and practical lessons. In this module they will get familiar with the advanced firefighting technics. More specific, they are going to get trained to choose the appropriate water usage technic for any situation during firefighting. Furthermore, applying the proper reentry technics in a ship compartment on fire, is another skill they will learn. Gas cooling technics are also a very important procedure every trainee should be familiarized with. Finally, the comprehension of direct and indirect attack during a firefighting operation is the most critical aspect of this module.

The firefighting is an operation which cannot be conducted from only one person. So, a team is needed in order that to be executed effectively. In this module the organization of the firefighting team is demonstrated. Especially, every trainee will have the opportunity to get informed about the basic tasks of all personnel involved in a firefighting team. Namely, he may get familiar with the tasks of the team leaders, the attack teams and also the peripheral cooling team.

It is fact that during a fire a lot of gases are spread to the burning compartment and the environment around it. Thus, the members of the firefighting team need to use breathing apparatus so as to have access to breathable air in that dangerous atmosphere. In this module the trainees will learn, firstly, about the specifications of the Positive Breathing Apparatus. After that they are going to get informed about its parts and their usage. Finally, every trainee will get familiar with the preparation procedure and of course how to use the breathing apparatus properly in order to be safe in a firefighting operation.

In order to confront a fire effectively, a firefighter should have at least basic knowledge about its nature. First of all, is vital to know how fire and heat are transmitted. Furthermore, the physical characteristics of flammable materials, such as the flashpoint and the self-ignition point, are indicators of which materials will get burned first and how dangerous they are. Moreover, a firefighter is crucial to know the various stages in the life cycle of a fire. In that way he will be able to recognize potential dangers and implement corresponding best confrontation practices in every stage of the life cycle of a fire in an enclosed compartment. All this knowledge is provided in this module.

Thermal strain is a very dangerous condition which can be caused to a person during a firefighting procedure. In this module the trainees will have the opportunity to understand the mechanism of body temperature regulation. Moreover, they will learn to identify the symptoms of thermal stain and how these could be faced properly. Finally, the best practices for protection from thermal strain will be presented.

In this module it would be discussed the procedure which has to be followed from a seafarer when he discovers a fire in a ship compartment. Specifically, the trainees will be informed about the first actions they have to do when a fire is discovered. After that they should conduct all the required actions to avoid the spreading of the fire, until the Damage Control team is ready to start firefighting. Finally, this module gives information about the requirements of the initial report which has to be provided to the scene leader of the firefighting team.

In this module the trainees will have the opportunity to learn about the principles of ship stability. Especially, they will become familiar with the impact of gravity and buoyancy to ship stability. Moreover, they will realize the importance of the righting arm GZ. Furthermore, they will be able to interpret a stability curve. Finally, it will be referred the impact of the free surface effect on ship stability.

In this module two advanced firefighting training scenarios are presented. In the first scenario the trainees will learn the appropriate procedure for re-entry through hatches in a burning compartment using one hose during a hydrocarbon fire. In the second scenario they will get familiarized with the corresponding procedure for re-entry through hatches in a burning compartment using two hoses during a fire of liquid fuels.
