The on-scene leader is the person in charge at the scene. When a fire is “called away,” the scene leader will proceed immediately to the scene equipped with protective gloves and anti flash hood, ready to assume control of the fire party.

The scene leader should have a deep knowledge of the vessel environment and fire fighting principles, techniques and practices.

In a fire incident he should position himself where best able to control the situation
•	As safe as possible
•	As close to the incident as possible</notes>

The 1st assault team comprises of two people equipped with protective gloves and anti flash hood.

They should reach the incident area and start fire fighting with portable extinguishers at first. The idea is to start the fire fighting effort as soon as possible

So, the 1st person attacks the fire with extinguishers and the 2nd connects a water hose

Normally cannot remain in an area with smoke for more than 2 minutes. They will be replaced by the 2nd assault team.

The team leader, directs the efforts of attack teams to extinguish a fire. They must know the layout of the affected space, and be aware of any hazards.

They will direct personnel inside the burning compartment, while using the Naval Firefighter’s Thermal Imager (NFTI) (if available). Conditions within the space will include reduced visibility, limited or no lighting, and often smoke or steam. The team leader should direct nozzlemen and hosemen around hazards, following specific routes to reach the source of the fire.

Once the fire is extinguished, they will use the NFTI to observe for hot spots and to complete overhaul of the space.

They will relay reports of conditions by word of mouth to the on-scene leader.</notes>

•	Peripheral Cooling
Maybe the most important task of the fire containment team is peripheral cooling. It has to do with cooling compartments adjacent to the fire to prevent fire spreading through convection. The primary target for cooling are the compartments directly above the fire, since fire tends to spread upwards more easily. Another important practice is to use as less water as possible, in order to avoid affecting ship’s stability. </notes>

They may also carry special equipment such as axes, wire cutters etc.

The team has the following responsibilities

•	Search nearby neighboring areas to the burning compartment

The idea here is to notify for potential dangers such as flammable or explosive materials, or electrical and electronic devices that may create new fire sources, or may be affected by the fire fighting effort

•	Prepare the neighboring areas

Remove potential flammable or explosive material, remove insulation, and perform electrical isolation to electrical and electronic equipment

•	Smoke management

As far as smoke management is concerned the team should establish smoke boundaries and enforce them with some of the members acting as guards. Furthermore, they should prepare and implement a desmoking plan when ordered by the Fire Fighting Leader

•	Peripheral Cooling

Maybe the most important task of the fire containment team is peripheral cooling.
